Sonny don't go away

1 Sonny lives on a farm, in a wide open space 4 1 4 1 You can take off your sneakers and give up the race 5 You can lay down your head, on a sweet river bed 4 1 5 Sonny always remembers the words Mamma says 1 Sonny don't go away, I'm here all alone 4 1 4 1 Your Daddy's a sailor who never comes home, 5 Nights get so long, and the silence goes on, 4 1 5 I'm feeling so tired and I'm not all that strong Sonny carries a load, though he's barely a man There ain't that much to do, but he does what he can And he watches the sea from a room by the stairs And the waves keep on rolling, they've done that for years and for years It's a hundred miles to town, Sonny's never been there But he goes to the highway and stands there and stares And the mail comes at four the mailman is old Sonny still dreams his dreams full of silver and gold Sonny's dreams can't be real, they're just stories he's read There's stars in his eyes, there's dreams in his head And he hungers inside for that wide world outside But he knows he can't hold it, though he's tried, and he's tried
